“Human beings are weak,” says Krishan Sethi. “We want to escape to a world of strength.” This is why Sethi is confident that mythological stories will always find takers, no matter how ‘modern’ the era. Sethi, who is a Mumbai-based director, has been in Bangalore to work on two Kannada serials produced by Cinevistaas – Seethe, which hit 569 episodes recently, and now Mahabharatha, which has just gone on air. Sethi was requested by the producer of Seethe to continue for the production house’s new project, which is an ambitious venture with grand sets and a four year-plan, with an aim of 1,000 episodes. No modern retelling “They are very fond of mythological stories,” Sethi re-asserts, speaking over the shooting in the background: a chorus chants greetings to each of the five Pandavas, in all their bedecked glory.

“Public ko bahut acchi lagti hai. ” An essential part of this, he says, is that they don’t stray from Vyasa’s version of the epic text – there are no attempts to retell it for a modern audience.

“We can’t change anything in Mahabharatha or Ramayana,” he declared. “What is there, we will follow.” In his 40-year career, this was Sethi’s first time with mythological material, but the fixity of the text helped him. His previous oeuvre includes the DD series Junoon, as well as episodes of Katha Sagar (such as ‘Zameen’, the adaptation of Tolstoy’s How Much Land Does A Man Need ). After the era of DD-domination ended, Sethi found himself directing soaps such as Hamari Betiyon Ka Vivaah. After a career spent largely in Hindi, how does he surpass the language barrier? On set, next to him, he keeps a handwritten Hindi document.

On-and-off, over the last two or so years, Sethi has spent time in Bangalore, for Seethe. By now, he understands – but can’t speak – Kannada. And there’s a battery of assistants to make sure little, if anything, is lost in translation.

“Film technique is the same, whether it is Hindi or Kannada. I know the meaning of what is going on,” he says. That said, Sethi did find changes in audiences down south. “I found that for Kannada, people are very intellectual. The people here are more literate,” he reasoned. “So we try our level best, to give them some good, intellectual TV.” So far, there’s no reason to suppose that the Kannada serial will fall short – compared to, say, the classic, booming authority of Harish Bhimani in the earlier Mahabharat.

The handful of episodes that have aired so far have been met warmly, with enthusiastic phone-calls coming in after the show aired. In terms of his own directing career, Sethi is no stranger to changing tides. “Today, if you see any channel, they prefer young directors and those too, they keep changing.” At 60, he doesn’t plan to stop directing any time soon. “As long as I keep getting work, I’ll stay. I like direction so I don’t get tired. If I run out of work, I’ll go back to Mumbai and relax,” he smiles. Mahabharatha airs on weekdays at 6 p.m.
